Warm. Welcoming. Inspiring.
The magic of Winnifred lives on here.

About Us

No matter who you were, no matter where you were from, everyone always felt like they belonged at my ‘nanna’ Winnifred’s home. I felt this same enveloping warmth of welcome on my very first visit to the growers of Champagne over ten years ago.

All throughout region Champagne, the growers invited me into their homes and their lives, generously sharing their knowledge, passion and extraordinary Champagnes, leaving me with the sense that I was part of their extended family.

So, I thought it only fitting to name my business Winnifred’s, after the woman who lived and breathed true hospitality, who shaped who I am, whose generosity of spirit I experience every time I am welcomed back to Champagne.

This is what Winnifred’s on Arthur is all about – a way to transport you to region Champagne to experience the same warmth of welcome that I receive at each growers’ home, to feel their energy and passion. To invite you in to explore the diversity of extraordinary, unique terroir-driven Champagnes, from growers and Grande Marque houses, and tempt you, as the mouthwatering scent of our French fare awakens your appetite, to stay for a meal with us, unhurried. To keep coming back to a place you feel completely at home. To linger a little longer and enjoy ‘just one more glass’.

A beacon of sustainable enjoyment – Australia’s first net zero energy hospitality venue

Each of the 63 growers, and Grande Marque houses, showcased at Winnifred’s are dedicated to ethical production, including both biodynamic viticulture and certified organic practices. The result is an extraordinary diversity of excellent Champagnes that not only express their terroir, but truly respect and nurture the environment they come from.

Winnifred’s continues their commitment to being gentle on the earth with a target of being the first net-zero energy venue in Australia, completely powered by the sun with a 96-panel solar array channelled into three commercial batteries.

PUTTING 300 DAYS OF SUNSHINE TO GOOD USE

From the very beginning, Winnifred’s wanted to reduce its commercial carbon footprint and simultaneously streamline overhead costs by utilising the building’s prime position and flat, tiered roof to harvest solar energy. Megan reached out to Springers Solar to provide a solution that would enable the venue to get as close to its net zero energy goal as possible.

STORED SAFELY FOR OVERNIGHT USE

96 solar panels were installed in a herringbone design for maximum energy production. The panels’ smaller size and powerful rating is ideal as more panels occupy the roof, meaning more could be fitted to achieve a high level of production. Energy not used during the day is channelled into three commercial Tesla batteries to be used to power the Champagne fridges and cool rooms overnight.

From concept to launch, every detail was considered to reflect the dream of creating a bar that first and foremost is about Champagne, with every visit a memorable, and adventurous experience.

Collaborators

It takes a region to make Champagne… and a team to make Winnifred’s.

Winnifred’s started with a vision for ‘a small Champagne bar’. Fast forward ten years of Megan travelling to Champagne, meeting and building relationships with the growers, importing and promoting them, hunting for the right boutique space, a serendipitous visit to a building with potential on Arthur Street and then… the beginning of a two-and-a-half-year design and build journey that has transformed the vision of Winnifred’s into reality.

In much the same way that it takes a region to make Champagne – the growers who grow and tend and pick and create their own Champagnes, who meet regularly to share expertise, techniques, wisdom, physical time and energy at harvest, recipes for organic fertilizer and best practice biodynamic companion planting to scare pests away & attract the kind of biodiversity that makes a vineyard sing (but so much more about that later) – it’s taken an extraordinary team to bring Winnifred’s to life. A team that has put so much more than just time and expertise into it - their passion, flair, tenacity and dare we say it… love.

Greatness is in the details. And at Winnifred’s, every detail, no matter how small, has been examined, shaped and perfected – and it shows. Photographs don’t do it justice. Some things, some places just have to be seen and experienced to be appreciated. And we can’t wait to share it with you. Soon.

These are the stories behind the venue, the passion behind the decisions, the depth and breadth of what Winnifred’s is all about.
